Putting in the basement was an audacious change to the original scheme, brought about by realising that there was going to be a large hole in the ground following the exhumations, and rather than filling it in, we might as well make it bigger!

The lift core was already going to be going down into a pit inside the building, so we took the opportunity to take the lift down to a basement internally, and then take a tunnel out under the south wall into the new basement, which houses a common room, cinema room and gym.

After digging out the room to full size, a concrete shell was cast, then a concrete plank roof which then formed the raft foundations of the nine duplex studio apartments that were built on top of it. The finishing touch was a garden surrounded by the original gravestones.
